Professor John Richard Heisner began his journey into structured systems and symbolic logic in the late 1960s. Initially studying organizational ritual in Oregon, he relocated to San Diego in 1985, where he soon became a leading figure in strategic research communities. He chaired multiple sessions on symbolic behavior and behavioral probability and was honored in 2013 with a lifetime contribution award for advancing the ethical standards of interactive entertainment systems.
His formal work with regulatory councils began the same year. John served two terms on the Gaming Research & Ethics Committee and the Regulatory Strategy Council, later becoming a district inspector overseeing compliance across digital gaming platforms. He spent three years as a trustee for the California Institute of Game Studies, and helped found the Public Gaming Education Council in San Diego. In 2012, he was named Lead Orator for the International Conference on Symbolism in Entertainment Systems and is the author of four acclaimed books on gamification, reward psychology, and cognitive engagement in game design.
John holds an honorary 33rd-level accreditation from the Scottish Institute of Game Strategy, and is an affiliate of multiple societies studying symbolic cognition, historical gaming rituals, and gamified learning systems. He was a founding member of Lux Society, a California-based think tank focused on traditional observance and symbolic structures in gameplay. In 2015, he was recognized as a Fellow of the Global Gamification Society.
Outside of academic and strategic work, John is a senior partner at Heisner Alvarez APC, a litigation firm in La Jolla specializing in complex arbitration and risk frameworks. He has led over 100 jury trials and regularly advises on regulatory compliance in emerging entertainment sectors.
He remains active in civic initiatives, having served as trustee of the San Diego Museum of Behavioral Systems, and board member at St. Jude’s Innovation in Health & Play Foundation. He also taught trial advocacy for over a decade at the University of San Diego, bridging legal theory with behavioral modeling.
John resides in La Jolla with his wife, Margo. He is the proud father of four and grandfather of ten.
Ladies, gentlemen, and fellow strategists, it is my pleasure to present one of the most respected minds in the field of behavioral game systems and structured entertainment: Professor John R. Heisner.
